My English Memoir Literacy

English Memoir Literacy

English, when I hear this word and flashback into my childhood. I cannot imagine that I am student of English Language and Literature in one of Private Universities now. When I was child, I just a child come from a small town in South Sumatera. Furthermore my father and my mother were not familiar to teach English to me because they have not basic in English. I heard English from my sisters and my brothers; they talked each other in English but not in complete sentences. Sometimes, they mixed in Besemah Language or Indonesian.

I start to learn English about nine years old, when I was in fourth grades in Elementary School. My School had not complete facilities such as reading or listening rooms like today, because I grew up in nineties which economic that was not good and the perspective of Besemah Society that though if education was not important yet especially English. There had not English Courses yet like in the City. English was only for rich people or for people who had parents from High Education.

When I was in Elementary School I never thought that English are important to me but I still excited to learned it and I think that I was not bad in English because my teacher just tough about how to introduce myself, number, kinds of color and alphabet. After that, in fifth and sixth grades my teacher gave me and my friend about vocabulary, noun or pronoun in English such as eat, drink, bag, shoes, mother, father, sister, brother etc. not only it, my teacher also tough about plural and singular but I learn English by memorizing so I was not know which one that right or wrong. I also memorize how to pronounce such words by my teacher way because I thought that my teacher is always right.

In Junior High School, I found some grammatical error that I got in Elementary School especially in plural and singular such as mouse that change to mice if there are two mouse or more than two (plural) because I wrote “two mouses” in my assignment, I thought that noun plural just added s/es. In fact I was wrong and I start to change my point of view in learn English by memorizing to understanding. I felt in love with English, because the way of my teacher tough was so fun and also he was handsome. His name is Sir Mawardi, his way in teaching English so fun not only me that loving him so much but all of my friends. I think that if we are fun in learn something we can understand quickly and get the point.

Three years in my Junior High School my teacher tough me about tenses, kinds of tenses. I start learn reading some articles in my textbooks, listening from type recorder because there is no listening labs or listening room in my school. I was very happy in learn English since my friends also exited and we start to sang a Westlife’s song that famous at the time. My friend said that I was favorite student of Sir Mawardi because he wanted me to help him to tough his student in Senior High School. I always remember when he said that I more clever in tenses than his student in Senior High School, even though I was not feel like that.

I also start to speak English when I was in English Class. Although, I never knew about Grammar and my vocabulary was limited. But I tried to brave in speaking because I never can if I never try. To enrich my knowledge in English I joined in Course, I more frequently used it because I have many friends to each other because in my town if we talked in English people will said something bad about us. So, we cannot use English every time.

When I was graduated from Junior High School, I choose to join in Vocational School with Accounting as my concentration because I interested in it. However, when I joined in Vocational School I never used English. I rarely came in English Courses till I stopped from that course. I also rarely to learn English because my main subject is Accounting, I learned it eight hours a week but I still found English in Accounting Terms such as Purchase, Sell, profit, budget, capital, cash, assets, debit, credit, tax, deficit, inventory and so on. I learned English by those terms for enrich my vocabulary. In my school, I learned English only two hours a week and I just spoke English by dialogue that usually gave from my teacher.

After I graduated from my Vocational School, I planned that I will take Accounting as my major but I don’t know why I studying at English Language and Literature. My father and mother never force me to take major but I am interest in English. I found Faculty of English Teaching even though my major had to change into English Language and Literature, may God showed that English is my way. In early semester I knew that there is Oxford Dictionary that containing in English-English. Honestly, I never found it before. I start to confidents in learn English till I almost give in because I thought that English is so hard because I also learning Linguistics that there are so many term that unfamiliar to me.

Although I almost give up since there are some of my friends that resign from English Major but I always think about my parents and I am sure that I must survive there. I try to enjoying in English when I think that I have already got so many experiences and I thought that English is in my compulsory. And I start to study hard since my dream going to abroad. I also much interest in English because there I learned about culture and so many things that I never know before. I can talk English as much as I want since my friends come from the same major. It helps me to improve my ability.

I got many things from my lecturers. I am not only learning about English but also English and American Literature. Now, I have new knowledge about English such as Grammar, Speaking, Listening, and Reading. I can differentiate where the wrong and right pronounce and others. I also know about Branches of Linguistics and Aspects of Linguistics. I am lucky that I can learn English in depth and I realize that studying Language is important for human being like us.

Nowadays, I using English with my friends and I can talk to native. it was awesome for me who come from a small town. There are many advantages that I got in learning English, I also know that there is planning by God to me why I joined in English Language and Literature. I am writing some literary works such poem, lyric of song in English right now since I interest in Art or Literature from I was child. Now, I am student of eight semesters in English Language and Literature. I start writing thesis in English. I also try to writing in English on my social networking such a blog even though I have some grammatical error. I can says that I am truly felt in love in English and I really did.
