Song

Edmund Waller (1606)

Go, lovely rose!
Tell her that wastes her time and me,
That now she knows,
When I resemble her to thee,
How sweet and fair she seems to be.

Tell her that’s young,
And shuns to have her graces spied,
That hadst thou sprung
In deserts, where no men abide,
Thou must have uncommended died.

Small is the worth
Of beauty from the light retired;
Bid her come forth,
Suffer herself to be desired,
And not blush so to be admired.

Then die! that she
The common fate of all things rare
May read in thee;
How small a part of time they share
That are so wondrous sweet and fair!

READER RESPONSE

SONG

By. Edmund Waller

Song is one of literary works by Edmund Waller; he is an English poet who had been creating many literary works. Song is the outstanding poem by him, this poem published in 1645. And it has four stanzas with five lines each stanza. When I saw this poem firstly, I little bit confused because I think is not a poem but a lyric. The words of its poem are so beautiful till I cannot get the idea. Moreover, it is an old poem that using old English also. I must think deeply to know what it is about.

This poem tells about young man that wants to tell to his sweetheart about his love, but they have a different status social. The woman is rich and he is no but, he want to be the woman as his sweetheart and he tell to forget their status social. ‘Song’ is such a young man, he send a rose to his beloved to tell her that she waste his time. The man is shy and staying out of sight because he is not rich person, he telling her how much her beauty. It mean he want to say that she is a rose that precious and the man is only a “Song” that describe that he has not much money, he just has a feeling same as a song.

I think this poem is usually happening in our life, because there are so many people that have cannot be a couple because they have different status social. And it can be a problem because they cannot together. I think its poem has a hidden message if we love someone, we must forget the difference between us. Because sometime the difference that make us be “One” and we can make our life complete with it.

I think, it is also happened with the writer. And he is clever person because he uses the ‘Rose’ as a symbol of her beauty and it also as a symbol of the precious. And he uses ‘Song’ as a symbol of his simply, because the man just has a feeling like a song. He compare to a rose and a song, I love this poem because the man has brave to showing his feeling even though they cannot together.
